Meaning of Web Portal:

Web Portal is special kind of website that is made to bring information from the diverse sources in a uniform way. Normally the word portal is meant by any entrance or door. In the context of Internet, Web Portal is also one type of entrance to digitality. Each and every information source gets its own space or area over the Web Page. Content of the portal is mostly dependent upon the users and purpose of the Web Portal. Here users can also determine which content should be added and which should be deleted but these all are dependent upon a user's role. Vertical Portals provide news, e-commerce capabilities etc. Dynamic Multimedia Applications (Video posting, Blogging, Social media etc.)are also the part of the Vertical Portals.

  • In 1990s, many Government had started to created their Web Portals for their citizens or for the specific audience.
  • As Intranet Technology has grown, the web masters started to face challenges like user management and content management. So many companies started to provide tools to help web masters to manages their data and users. So it came out as Corporate Web Portals.
  • Cultural Portals are based around specific national or regional groupings of institutions.
  • Stock Portal is also known as Stock Share Portal or Stock Market Portal or Stock Exchange Portal. Such Web Portal is a web application which provides different information related to stock market i.e. latest price, latest news, announcements and reports also.
  • Search Portal aggregates results of different search engines into single webpage.
  • Property Web Portal aggregate result or information about properties for sale by real estate agents.
